What is Retina?

Retina is a neuronal tissue layer that lines the back of the eye. It senses light and generates impulses that travel through the optic nerve to reach the brain. This nervous tissue consists of numerous specialized nerve cells that react to light.

Central part of the retina, called as Macula , helps us to see the fine details clearly.

Retinal Conditions

Retinal conditions that we treat :-

Symptoms

There are a number of symptoms which can be experienced due to a retinal condition. Some of these symptoms warrant an urgent ophthalmologist (specialist eye doctor) opinion. Only based on symptoms it is difficult to diagnose a retinal condition. This is why a consultation, with full documentation of your eye history, examination, and if necessary additional tests, is required. Some common retinal symptoms include :

FLOATERS and FLASHES of Light

Appearance of small dark spots or threads in vision that seem to float around are called as floaters. These are usually a normal phenomenon. If there is a sudden increase in number of these floaters (in thousands) or if you observe a bright streak of light in peripheral vision (Flashes) , this may indicated a retinal tear and an urgent attention should be sought.

DISTORTION of CENTRAL VISION

Appearance of straight lines or objects as crooked or distorted/broken almost always indicates a macular disorder. Age Related Macular Distortion is the most common cause of macular pathology Although many other conditions of macula can cause similar symptoms. Often a problem of macula goes unnoticed as it is compensated by the other normal seeing eye. Anyone at risk of macular problems should periodically test their eyes separately by covering one eye. The Amsler Grid is a useful way of testing for distortion

BLIND SPOTS

Blind spots or scotomas seen at center or near the center of vision are also a symptom of macular disease. They are seen at the same point of vision even when the eye is moved unlike floaters which move around even after the eye movement stops. Such symptoms require urgent attention.

SHADOWS OR CURTAINS IN VISION

Such dull unclear areas of vision usually starting from periphery can be seen in individuals with retinal detachment and an urgent attention should be sought.

SEVERE EYE PAIN

Retinal conditions themselves do not cause any pain as the retinal tissue is only sensitive to light and not to pain. However certain inflammatory or infective conditions can cause severe eye pain which can also affect the retina.

Patients experiencing severe eye pain after undergoing any intraocular surgery should contact their treating doctors immediately or seek emergency help.

DIFFICULTY READING

There are numerous causes for poor near vision. Unless this develops suddenly or is associated with one of the above symptoms, it is most likely due to presbyopia- which is age related reduction in focusing ability of eye to see near objects clearly. Presbyopia can be treated by wearing reading glasses, however if it does not improve with glasses also consultation with an ophthalmologist is recommended.
